OxfordAQA officially launches in Portugal!

OxfordAQA officially launches in Portugal!

We were honoured to hold our official launch event at the residence of the British Ambassador to Portugal, Lisa Bandari, in sunny Lisbon this week.

School leaders came to hear all about OxfordAQA and what we can offer International schools in Portugal from our speakers Andrew Coombe Managing Director of OxfordAQA and Pablo Guillen, Senior School Relationship Manager for Iberia. Alex Sykes Managing Director for the International Education division at Oxford University Press talked about the Oxford International Programme and how it develops the skills and attitudes students need for the future.

We were delighted to be joined by our guest speaker, Sophie Armitage, Assistant Headteacher at The British School of Lisbon – one of the first approved centres in Portugal – to hear about their journey so far with OxfordAQA.

We also heard from Dr Alexandra Tomescu, Generative AI Specialist at Oxford University Press, who delivered a thought provoking session on the Oxford approach to AI in the classroom.

Thank you to the Ambassador and to the British Embassy in Lisbon for their gracious hospitality and for welcoming us so warmly.

We look forward to working with more schools across Portugal soon!

Harnessing Happiness: Lessons from the Netherlands for Enhancing Classroom Dynamics

Enhancing Classroom Dynamics: Learning from the Netherlands

Sapienti International School continuously seeks innovative ways to enhance educational environments based on global best practices. Notably, the Netherlands, often cited for having the happiest children, offers valuable lessons.

Embracing Playful Learning

The Dutch emphasis on play-based learning in early education encourages children to explore and learn dynamically. By incorporating this approach, teachers at Sapienti can facilitate more engaged and joyful learning experiences.

Implementing Play-Based Strategies:

  • Establish interactive zones in classrooms for art, construction, and quiet study.
  • Provide diverse materials like LEGO, musical instruments, and puzzles.
  • Rearrange classroom settings to promote collaborative projects and free movement.
  • Include regular outdoor activities that encourage nature exploration and physical play.

Fostering Emotional Awareness and Autonomy

By adapting Dutch practices of emotional intelligence education, Sapienti School aims to develop students’ self-awareness and emotional resilience. Daily ’emotion’ check-ins using tools like colour-coded cards or feelings thermometers help students express and manage their emotions effectively.

Activities to Advance Emotional Awareness:

  • Personal greetings to acknowledge each student’s presence daily.
  • Resource corners with books and media that explore diverse emotional landscapes.
  • Quiet zones for students to retreat when feeling overwhelmed.
  • Regular opportunities for reflective journaling and emotional literacy exercises.

Promoting Physical Health Through Cycling

In the Netherlands, a large number of students cycle to school, which boosts their physical activity and overall health. While replicating Dutch cycling infrastructure might be challenging, Sapienti can adopt certain initiatives to promote cycling.

Cycling Initiatives:

  • Start a ‘Bike Buddies’ program to encourage students to cycle together.
  • Organize cycling safety workshops in collaboration with local bike shops.
  • Set up a dedicated area for bike parking on school grounds.

Encouraging Nutritious Breakfast Routines

The Dutch model of family breakfasts contributes significantly to student performance and well-being. Sapienti can incorporate elements of this communal and nutritious start to the day within the school environment.

Breakfast Club Ideas:

  • ‘Good Morning’ juice circles to share updates and foster community.
  • A ‘Healthy Snack Club’ where students bring and share fresh fruits before classes begin.
  • ‘Taste of Home’ days, where students share their typical breakfast foods.

Inspirations from Forest Schools for Conventional Education

Inspiration from Forest Schools for Traditional Educational Approaches at Sapienti International School

While traditional schools typically operate within classrooms, forest schools offer a refreshing educational model that thrives outdoors. These schools blend play with learning, fostering a deep connection between students and the natural world. This blog explores how Sapienti International School can borrow from the forest school philosophy to enhance our educational strategies and promote holistic student development.

What Can We Learn from Forest Schools?

Forest schools are characterized by their immersive outdoor setup where students interact directly with nature. This method not only supports cognitive and motor skills development but also cultivates a strong bond with the environment, instilling values of sustainability from an early age.

Here are key areas where our traditional schooling system can learn from forest schools:

  • Nature and Sustainability: At forest schools, students spend significant time outdoors, engaging in activities like wildlife study and tree planting. We can incorporate similar nature-based learning experiences at Sapienti International School, enhancing our students’ understanding of ecological balance and environmental responsibility.
  • Experiential Learning: Hands-on activities are central to forest schools, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By including more experiential learning opportunities in our curriculum, we can make education more engaging and relevant for our students.
  • Child-Centred Approach: Forest schools prioritize student autonomy, allowing children to explore topics that interest them at their own pace. Emulating this approach, we can introduce more personalized learning strategies to cater to the unique needs of each student at Sapienti.
  • Holistic Development: The forest school model looks beyond academic achievements to consider emotional and social growth. Integrating holistic development practices, we aim to nurture well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also emotionally and socially competent.

Implementing Forest School Principles at Sapienti

To adapt these forest school principles, we can start by organizing regular outdoor activities such as gardening, nature walks, and field trips. These not only make learning fun but also help students appreciate the beauty and importance of the natural world.

By seamlessly integrating these practices, Sapienti International School can provide a more dynamic and enriched learning environment that prepares students for various real-world challenges while fostering a lifelong love for learning.

Gone are the days of conventional penalty-driven measures; instead, we engage students through positive reinforcement tactics that align with our core educational principles.

What is Positive Reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement involves acknowledging and rewarding desirable behaviors, thus encouraging students to repeat them. It shifts focus from punishing undesirable actions to celebrating successes, however small.

Creative Activities to Foster Wellbeing

Let’s delve into some of the creative initiatives we champion to promote a healthy, engaging learning atmosphere:

  1. Visual Storytelling: We encourage students to convey their narratives through visual means, enhancing their communication and artistic skills. Workshops in storyboard creation and visual journaling allow students to express complex emotions and stories through art.
  2. Expressive Writing: From poetry to reflective essays, writing is a therapeutic channel for students. It fosters a deep understanding of personal experiences and emotions, aiding in emotional maturity and mental clarity.
